White Mountain ¾ Home to mythical kingdoms wars and expeditions and strange and magical beasts the Himalayas have always loomed tall in our imagination Overrun at different times by Buddhism Taoism shamanism Islam and Christianity they are a grand central sta I'm not a great lover of fiction but I do like a good story and this book provides plenty of these Seeded around his own family history and nurtured by his personal experience Rober Twigger explores the rather large area centred on the Himalayas in this book His research has unearthed a host of known and little known fascinating details of the history of the region its mapping and the early exploration and diverse motivations of western mostly British German and Russian explorers He looks at many disparate subjects such at the effects of altitude on physiology the interaction between Buddhism and the older Bon religion attitudes to the sacred in Tibet over several centuries and the difference in the various nations' actions in the region Several chapters describe some of the disasters and triumphs in the attempts to scale Everest and other important mountains in the area uite extraordinary storiesI was uite grateful for relatively short chapters I'd always rather be left with 'so what's next?' than 'oh no not another one'The end chapters include interesting observations on the history of Nagaland where his grandfather and father lived worked and grew up in the colonial service the stories he remembers from his own childhood He thoughtfully examines the effects of different types of influence on the ancient historic cultures This I felt reflects even now on the many old communities still remaining in our rapidly changing contemporary world and the problems we are facing As usual his writing is seeded with many humorous asides and insightful observations and he asks a number of pertinent existential uestions Altogether an excellent and most enjoyable start to my 2020 reading pdf ´ White Mountain à Robert Twigger
