I expected to like this book about a Jewish family history far than I did Unfortunately I found it too muddled and drawn out It also reminded me of reading elaborate lists It was dare I say dull By the time the family had settled in Vienna I was about to give up as I really didn t care any longer I hate not finishing a book so I persevered albeit slowly For me it did improve when the 1930s WW2 and the Nazis came into the story but it was a very long wait until then It wasn t a book I felt I had to rush to pick up which was disappointingWould I recommend this book Probably not unless you like a ponderous read

I read this for my book club and found it uite a difficult read I found the story interesting but a bit unfocused it has a structure which follows the history of a collection of Japanese netsuke tiny figurines that the author has inherited starting with the relative who collected them It takes in the history of the author s family the high society that the family moved in antisemitism the two world wars wealth and inheritance art love and families It s uite wide ranging to say the least The book had caught the imagination of the book club member who chose it but no one else in the book club managed to finish it apart from me I probably wouldn t have finished but felt obliged since I lead the book club I am glad I did finish and the two of us had a great discussion about it Mixed feelings

The Hare with Amber Eyes A Hidden Inheritance Audio Download Amazon co uk Edmund de Waal Michael Maloney Random House AudioBooks Audible AudiobooksNd Hare with Amber Eyes A PDF used Charles as the model for the aesthete Swann in Remembrance of Things Past Charles s passion was collecting the netsuke bought when Japanese objects were all the rage in the salons were sent as a wedding present to his banker cousin in Vienna Later three children including a young Ignace would play with the netsuke as history reverberated around them The Anschluss and Second World War swept the Ephrussis to the brink of oblivion Almost all that remained of their vast empire was the netsuke collection smuggled out of the huge Viennese palace then occupied by Hitler s theorist on the Jew. Finally got around to reading it It s beautifully written but to be honest the subject matter is a little dull The author is basically describing how he ends up with some family heirlooms It starts in Paris which is interesting follows the original buyer throughout his life Then it moves to Vienna when the cabinet of netsuke is given as a wedding gift Description of that family and the times they lived in Very nice I was struggling at this stage It s a good read but nothing had gripped meAnd then the Nazis cameThe author s family was Jewish by the wayReading how his great grandfather and family were treated must be one of the most moving experiences I have had for uite a while The shocking efficiency of it The systematic removal of their property their dignity all done in such a cold calculated way Completely chillingI would recommend reading this book just for that The remainder is a well research fond family memoir which is written with great skill But the Nazisthat part kept me awake at night Brrrmay we never ever forgetXxx
