A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOKThe Babylonians invented it the Greeks banned it the Hindus worshipped it and the Christian Church used it to fend off heretics Today its a timebomb ticking in the heart of astrophysics For zero infinitys twin is not like other numbers It is both nothing and everythingZero has pitted East against West and faith against reason and its intransigence persists in the dark core of a black hole and the brilliant flash of the Big Bang Today zero lies at the heart of one of the biggest scientific controversies of all time the uest for a theory of everything Within the concept of zero lies a philosophical and scientific history of humanityCharles Seifes elegant and witty account takes us from Aristotle to superstring theory by way of Egyptian geometry Kabbalism Einstein the Chandrasekhar limit and Stephen Hawking Covering centuries of thought it is a concise tour of a world of ideas bound up in the simple notion of nothing Only those who are truly confident of their subject dare write about it as plainly and simply as Seife At first I had doubts was this too elementary? But this was a failing on my part not his Once I got into the mathematics and physics I was grateful for such succinctnessWhether you come to this book from general interest as an historian of ideas as I did or a scientist broadening his range you should get much out of itAnd believe me it is an exciting readEveryone should have a go at every chapter even if they don't read each to its endIt is now nearly ten years since its publication so much progress has been made but Seife provides a good grounding I will be able to follow and appreciate what is being added to our knowledgeI am truly glad I have read this book
