I was prompted to buy this kindle book by the current drama on TV ‘White House Farm’ and in fact found the book so gripping that I have finished it well before the final TV episode I recall the case at the time and in particular the lurid headlines about Sheila I come at it from a legal background and so I was particularly keen to read about the crimes investigation trial and subseuent appeals It was particularly interesting to then read the full decision of the Court of Appeal citation is given at the end of the book following the referral to it by the CCRC in 2002 and I recommend this to readers The author appears to have carried out thorough research and has set out a compelling account of matters She has also provided a detailed bibliography and identified source material meticulously There are 2 issues however which it might be suggested do not receive enough coverage in the book investigation or trial Firstly with regard to the noise level of the gun with or without the silencer on If the silencer was not attached might gun shots have been heard by neighbours The implication appears to be that the sound was significantly muffled by the attachment of the silencer and not heard by any neighbours It would have been good if this issue had been dealt with explicitly Secondly there is no discussion or ‘evidence’ revealed as to how the weapon might have or could have been held by the killer Eg would it have been difficult to hit the target without nestling the gun in the upper armshoulder Would the weapon have caused some marksbruising to the killer if held firmly against the upper armshoulder The apparent absence of any such marks on Sheila who was wearing just a night dress might have indicated she could not have been the killer an additional point that the prosecution might have pursued Overall a very good read

I purchased this as an e book for my kindle when it first came out but following the recent television series on ITV I actually went back to reading it againCarol Ann Lee has clearly spent a lot of time researching this case and putting all the material together to compile a very detailed book A large portion of the book is the back story to the Bamber family and sets in stone the lead up to the night of the murders Then the book covers the controversial way the murder enuiry was dealt with by Essex Police the famous court case and of course Jeremy Bamber's three decade campaign to prove his innocenceI did find the content of the book hard going at time not necessarily the subject matter but actually getting my head around the various people involved in this case I actually used a note pad and pen to write names down so I could understand the story & the who's who of people connected to the BamberCaffell family & the subseuent murder enuiry afterwardsI do not think anyone will find this book disappointing far from it but it is very heavy going at times I have given this book five stars because of the efforts Carol has put in here Colin Caffell's own autobiography is probably a slightly easier read for anyone interested in the case

This is one of those crimes that I thought I had a good sense of by sheer dint of the fact that through Jeremy Bamber's concerted effort to keep his fight for freedom in the headlines It turns out that my feeling that the facts did not bear out any certainty of where the truth lay have been put to restThe burning uestion of whether it was Jeremy Bamber who murdered his entire family or Sheila who murdered her family and then committed suicide are the only two options given Jeremy's phone call to the policeCarol Ann Lee does an excellent job of setting out the facts in a straightforward manner We hear not only about the crime scene itself but about the complex dynamics that ran through the family too This of course includes Sheila's mental health issues as well her adoptive mother June's own religious obsession which also reuired professional help Neville is portrayed as a serious man and one with exacting standards that I suspect both his adoptive children fell short ofI can't deny that there are a number of elements that clouded the investigation in its earliest days and I'm not sure that many of the wider family come off well in this instructive book but my conclusion matches those held by the jury over 30 years ago
